Australia's Regional Forestry Hubs
Government-designated concentrations of forest resource, wood processing, transport infrastructure and future industry development. For machinery owners they influence available work, mill destinations, utilisation, haul distances, technician availability, parts supply, resale, operator availability, mobilisation cost and competition.
Location changes the machine decision more than most buyers expect
Two identical machines do not have identical commercial value in different regions, and none of the difference appears on a specification sheet.
How to assess a region before basing equipment there
Whether you are relocating, expanding, or deciding whether a contract justifies a machine, these are the questions that decide it.
The last two questions are the ones most often skipped, and they are the ones that matter if the contract ends early. A machine with no alternative work and a thin local resale market is a very different risk from the same machine in a region with several estate owners and an active used market.
Regions in depth
Green Triangle
A major softwood region spanning south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia, and one of the strongest cases in Australia for dedicated high-production plantation fleets.
Tumut and the Murray Region
An important plantation and processing region with strong service presence from forestry equipment suppliers, which makes specialist fleet ownership more practical than in remote regions.
Tasmania
Steep ground, high rainfall and demanding traction conditions make Tasmania the most technically specialised harvesting environment in Australia.
South West Western Australia
An important plantation region with continuing softwood establishment — Western Australia recorded approximately 4,800 hectares of new softwood plantation establishment in 2024-25, by far the largest state contribution for that year.
Queensland
A mixture of plantations, native forestry under applicable rules, tropical forestry and large-scale vegetation management.
New South Wales
Multiple forestry regions creating genuinely different requirements — softwood plantation harvesting, hardwood operations, private forestry and vegetation management all coexist.
Gippsland
A designated Regional Forestry Hub with plantation resource, processing capacity and established transport infrastructure.
Northern Territory and Ord Region
The most remote of the Regional Forestry Hubs, where parts availability and technician access dominate the machine decision more than raw production capability.
