This is the most common felling decision in the Australian market, and it is decided by one number: annual paid felling hours.

This is not a productivity comparison. It is a feedstock decision, and it should be made from the material and the offtake specification backwards.

A forwarder carries logs completely off the ground in a load bunk. A skidder drags stems or logs to a landing. That single difference drives everything else: contamination, soil disturbance, speed, and which production system the machine belongs to.

Which production system should the fleet be built around?

A buyer should understand the production system before choosing individual machines. Choosing a machine first and then discovering which system it belongs to is how fleets become unbalanced.

Convert a machine you can resell, or buy one designed for the duty?

This is one of the biggest commercial buying decisions in forestry, and it resolves to a single question: how many paid forestry hours will this machine perform each year?

Grind the stump in place, or extract the root mass?

These machines do fundamentally different things. A grinder reduces the stump to chips with a high-speed cutter wheel, leaving the root mass below the cut depth. A shear penetrates, splits, loosens, extracts and handles the whole stump.

Process vegetation above the soil, or root systems below it?

A mulcher reduces standing vegetation to mulch on the surface. A tiller works below the soil surface — destroying root systems, incorporating stumps, breaking compaction and mixing woody residue into the profile.

Both attachments cut and hold. The difference is what the job demands of that hold.

Commit the capital, or convert it to a variable cost?

Owning spreads a large fixed cost across whatever hours the machine actually works. Hiring converts that to a variable cost and hands the residual-value risk back to the owner.

Pay for certainty, or pay less and inspect properly?

Forestry machines depreciate, but their condition varies dramatically. A used machine with 12,000 hours may have a rebuilt engine, pumps, boom, rotator and head, while a 6,000-hour machine may have been badly maintained.

Stability and flotation, or travel speed between trees?

Both configurations cut and bunch. The difference is what dominates the cycle: time spent travelling between trees, or the ability to stay stable and afloat where the ground is difficult.

Which published number should actually drive the specification?

This is the most common and most expensive specification error in Australian forestry. Manufacturers publish three different numbers, and buyers routinely quote only the largest.

Reading these

A comparison is only useful once the question is the right one

Most of the comparisons below are not really contests between two machines. They are two answers to different questions that buyers arrive believing are the same question. A tree shear and a feller buncher are not competing for the same job; they are competing for the same budget in businesses with very different annual felling hours. A chipper and a grinder do not compete at all once the offtake specification is known.

So each page here states a decision rule rather than a winner, and then works through situations where each option is the right answer. Where a comparison genuinely has a general answer — and a few do — the page says so plainly instead of manufacturing balance.

What these comparisons are actually deciding

Capability choices

Two machines that could both do the work, where the right one follows the material, the terrain or the product specification. Shear versus feller buncher, forwarder versus skidder, chipper versus grinder, mulcher versus tiller.

Configuration choices

One machine, two specifications, where the difference is which part of your work the machine is optimised for. Tracked versus wheeled, optimum versus maximum head capacity, excavator versus purpose-built carrier.

Commercial choices

Not about machines at all. Buy versus hire and new versus used are utilisation and capital-risk questions, and the machine is the same either way.

Three things that decide most of these before the comparison starts

The hours you can underwrite

Almost every comparison here moves with annual utilisation. Dedicated machines beat flexible ones above a threshold and lose below it; owning beats hiring above a break-even and loses below it. If the hours are uncertain, that uncertainty is itself the answer to several of these questions.

The constraint in your current chain

A comparison between two machines at a stage that is not your bottleneck is a comparison about cost, not production. Establish which stage limits your output before deciding which machine to put there.

What you are actually paid for

Tonnes, cubic metres, hectares, corridor kilometres, completed removals or delivered tonnes at an offtake point. Each unit rewards a different machine characteristic, and a comparison run in the wrong unit will reach a confident wrong answer.
