Using this table

What a specification comparison can and cannot settle

A table like this is good for one thing: establishing which machines are plausibly in scope, so that the effort of a proper evaluation goes into a shortlist rather than a market. It cannot tell you which machine will earn most in your business, because none of the figures here describe your hours, your material, your terrain or your chain.

The most common way this kind of table is misused is to rank machines by a headline figure and buy the top of the list. Across almost every class covered here, the advertised maximum is a capability bound and something else is the working limit — and the working limit is what determines cost per unit.

Reading the columns

What each field actually constrains

ColumnWhat it tells you, and what it does not
Carrier classA published guide to which machines can carry an attachment. It is not the check — the carrier's lift chart with the attachment, rotator and coupler fitted, at working reach, is what decides whether the combination works.
WeightFor attachments, mass that reduces lifting capability everywhere on the chart. For machines, an indicator of stability and durability, and a direct driver of ground pressure and transport cost.
CapacityThe largest material the machine can engage once. It is not a production figure, and for heads the delimbing or feed opening is usually the tighter practical bound.
PowerRarely the limiting specification on its own. Tractive force matters more on extraction machines; sustained hydraulic capability and cooling matter more on attachment carriers.
Hydraulic flowThe compatibility figure that most often disqualifies an otherwise suitable carrier. Check continuous flow and the working pressure at that flow — not peak flow and not relief pressure.

Four things no specification table contains

The optimum production range

Where a head, shear or mulcher is designed to be most productive, as distinct from what it can sever. Ask for it explicitly; it is frequently published and rarely advertised.

Sustained capability and cooling

Whether the machine holds full load through a hot afternoon. Mulching, grinding and continuous saw work are sustained duties, and a machine that derates loses hours in the season the contract exists for.

Consumable cost per unit

Teeth per hectare, chains per cubic metre, knives per tonne. It differs by species, soil and technique more than by machine, and it is the figure most likely to depart from a supplier's estimate.

Support in your region

What parts are held in Australia for this configuration, where, and what response is guaranteed in writing. In an interdependent fleet this is worth more than most specification differences.
