Choosing a cut-to-length fleet is choosing a production system, and the system has a specific risk profile worth understanding before the machine comparison begins.

CTL concentrates the work into two machines. The harvester fells, delimbs, measures, bucks and sorts at the stump; the forwarder carries the sorted logs to roadside. That produces cleaner wood, better assortment control, less soil disturbance, accurate production data and good thinning capability — real commercial advantages where mills pay for them.

The cost is concentration. If the harvester stops, wood production stops. There is no buffer, no parallel machine, and the head alone contains saw motors, feed motors, measuring sensors, feed rollers, delimbing knives, a control computer, valve block, rotator and hose runs. Dealer response time and local parts holding are therefore part of the machine specification, not a service consideration to settle later.

Against that, full-tree systems spread the work across a feller buncher, skidders, a processor and a loader — higher peak throughput and distributed failure risk, but four or more machines whose combined capital must all be carried by the slowest stage.
