What this fleet is built to do

This package is a deliberate trade. Instead of buying purpose-built machines that each do one job well, it buys a carrier and attaches capability to it. No individual task is performed as efficiently as a dedicated machine would perform it, and that is accepted in exchange for an asset that earns across civil earthworks, demolition, vegetation clearing, log handling, tree removal, stump removal, road construction and drainage.

The commercial logic is utilisation, not productivity. A dedicated mulcher is the better machine for mulching and the worse investment if mulching is four weeks of the year. Spreading the carrier's fixed cost across several unrelated demand cycles lowers the hourly rate every one of those jobs has to carry, and keeps the machine saleable to buyers who have never worked in forestry.

The package fails in one predictable way: when the carrier is chosen after the attachments, or chosen on operating weight alone without checking that the lift chart supports the work at the reach it is actually done at.

Attachments are rated on what they can cut. The carrier is rated on what it can hold. Green hardwood at the diameter an attachment can sever frequently exceeds what the boom can safely lift at reach.

Operators working closer than the job wants, refusing sections, or — the outcome this is meant to prevent — a machine going over.

What to do about it

Run the lift chart at the actual reach and slew angle with the actual attachment fitted, before purchase. Size the carrier to that calculation rather than to the attachment's cutting rating.

What carrier size does this package need?

The 20-30 tonne range is the common base: large enough to carry useful attachments and hold material at reach, small enough to transport on a standard float and to remain attractive to civil and demolition buyers at resale. The point within the range follows the stem sizes and reach the work requires.

What hydraulic capacity do the attachments need?

Confirm required flow and pressure for each attachment against the carrier's auxiliary circuit, and confirm whether a dedicated cooling package is needed. Mulchers are the demanding case: an underpowered circuit produces a machine that overheats and wears rather than one that simply works a little slower.

Which attachments should be owned?

Those used weekly. Attachments used a handful of days a year carry capital cost every day and earn on very few of them, so hire converts them into a job cost that can be passed through and keeps the coupler free for the work that pays.

Is a second machine justified?

When attachment changes are costing more billable time than a second carrier's fixed cost, or when two attachments are genuinely needed on the same site at once. Until then, a quick coupler usually solves the problem more cheaply.

Savings that cost more than they save

Sizing the carrier to the attachment's cutting rating

Cutting capacity and lift capacity are different specifications. A carrier chosen on the first will meet trees it can cut and cannot safely hold, which is the failure mode this package most needs to avoid.

Running a mulcher on a marginal hydraulic circuit

It will appear to work while overheating, cutting slowly and consuming teeth and bearings. The cost surfaces as premature wear that is easy to blame on the attachment.

Owning attachments used a few days a year

Specialist attachments carry capital cost daily and earn occasionally. Hire is cheaper and more flexible until utilisation genuinely justifies ownership.

Manual attachment changes to avoid a coupler

On a machine that changes function several times a week, unbillable change time accumulates into real money. The coupler is usually the cheapest productivity purchase in the package.

Is this package really competitive with purpose-built forestry machines?

Not on production per hour, and it is not trying to be. It competes on utilisation: the carrier earns across several industries instead of one, so its fixed cost is spread further and its resale market is much wider. The comparison worth making is between fleets over a year, not between machines over an hour — and the answer flips as soon as any single task carries enough annual hours to support a dedicated machine.

How do I check whether a carrier can handle an attachment?

Two separate checks. First, hydraulics: the attachment's required flow and pressure against the carrier's auxiliary circuit, plus cooling capacity for sustained load. Second, the lift chart at the reach and slew angle the work actually uses, with attachment, rotator and coupler weight deducted, compared against the weight of green material at the size you will be handling. The second check is the one most often skipped.

Should I buy a dozer as well?

Only when the work regularly needs it — windrowing, bulk pushing, access track formation at volume. A dozer is a second specialised asset with its own utilisation problem, and hiring one for the jobs that need it usually beats owning one that works occasionally. The test is the same as for attachments: how many days a year would it actually run?

What is the most common way contractors lose money on clearing jobs?

Quoting the felling and not the residue. Cleared material has to be mulched, chipped, windrowed, burnt under approval or carted, and that is a separate cost base from the clearing itself. The second most common is quoting from imagery without verifying stem density, stump content or soil abrasiveness — none of which are visible from a boundary and all of which move the cost per hectare substantially.
