Land-clearing businesses often need a different fleet philosophy entirely. Instead of owning six specialised purpose-built forestry machines, a contractor may operate a 20-30 tonne excavator with a forestry grapple, tree shear, grapple saw, stump shear and mulcher, supported by a dozer, a compact track loader, and a chipper or grinder.

The same base excavator can generate revenue from civil earthworks, demolition, vegetation clearing, log handling, tree removal, stump removal, road construction and drainage work. That substantially reduces asset concentration risk.

What this segment is actually contending with

Land clearing is the segment where fleet philosophy diverges most sharply from plantation harvesting. The defining decision is not which forestry machine to buy but whether to buy forestry machines at all, or to buy a carrier and attach forestry capability to it. A 20-30 tonne excavator carrying a forestry grapple, tree shear, grapple saw, stump shear and mulcher does most of the same work, and does it while remaining saleable to civil, demolition and earthmoving buyers.

That redeployability is the commercial point. Revenue can come from civil earthworks, demolition, vegetation clearing, log handling, tree removal, stump removal, road construction and drainage, which means a downturn in one sector does not idle the asset. In a market where clearing volumes track development approvals, mining activity and seasonal fire work, spreading exposure across several demand cycles is worth more than peak productivity in any one of them.

The cost of that flexibility is that no single task is performed as efficiently as a purpose-built machine would perform it. A dedicated forestry mulcher out-produces an excavator mulcher; a feller buncher out-produces a shear on an excavator. The trade is deliberate, and it is the right trade whenever utilisation in any one task would be too low to justify a dedicated machine.

This is the strongest commercial strategy available to a medium contractor. Own the excavator and the attachments used weekly. Hire the stump shear or specialised grapple saw only when a job requires them. The base asset keeps earning across several industries, and capital is not tied up in equipment used a few weeks a year.

Rarely the order they get made in. Each step constrains the ones below it, so working upward from a machine you already like tends to produce an expensive answer.

Choose the carrier before the attachments

The carrier sets the ceiling on everything that follows. Operating weight, hydraulic flow and pressure, boom geometry and lift chart determine which attachments can be run at all, and which can be run safely at reach. Buying an attachment first and then finding a carrier for it is how contractors end up with a machine that can close the shear but cannot lift what it has cut.

Verify hydraulic flow and pressure against every attachment

Mulchers in particular are unforgiving: an underpowered circuit produces a machine that cuts slowly, overheats and wears prematurely rather than one that simply works a bit less well. Confirm the required flow and pressure for each attachment against the carrier's auxiliary circuit specification, and confirm whether a dedicated cooling package is needed.

Work the lift chart, not the cutting capacity

An attachment's rated cutting diameter describes what it can sever, not what the carrier can hold. Deduct attachment, rotator and coupler weight from the lift chart at the reach and angle the work actually requires, and check the result against the weight of green hardwood at that size. This is the single most consequential calculation in attachment-based clearing.

Decide which attachments to own and which to hire

Attachments used weekly should be owned. Attachments used a handful of times a year — a large stump grinder, a specialist mulcher — often should not be. Hire converts a capital commitment into a job cost that can be passed through, and it keeps the coupler on the machine that earns every day.

Plan for the residue before the clearing starts

Clearing produces material, and what happens to it determines the job's margin. Mulch left on site needs no handling; chip needs a chipper and a truck; windrowed material may need burning approvals. Quote the disposal path, not just the felling, because a clearing job priced without residue handling is usually priced below cost.

Most businesses in this segment arrive at the middle stage. Knowing which stage you are buying into is what keeps the capital proportionate to the work.

Stage 1

Carrier plus one attachment

A 20-30 tonne excavator with a forestry grapple, hiring specialist attachments as jobs require them.

Lowest exposure, and the machine remains fully saleable into the general earthmoving market if clearing work does not materialise.

Stage 2

Carrier plus an owned attachment set

The same carrier with grapple, shear or grapple saw, and a mulcher, supported by a compact track loader for finishing work.

Capital rises but so does the range of work that can be quoted without hire dependence. This is where most established clearing businesses sit.

Stage 3

Multi-carrier with dedicated production machines

Two or more carriers, a dozer, and a chipper or grinder where residue volumes justify it.

Justified by sustained volume rather than by job variety. Dedicated machines only pay once one task is running enough hours to stand alone.

Expensive mistakes specific to this work

Matching the attachment to the tree instead of the carrier

A shear rated to the stem diameter on site is the easy check. Whether the boom can hold that stem at reach is the check that prevents a rollover. Always run the lift chart with the attachment, rotator and coupler weight deducted.

Running a mulcher on an undersized hydraulic circuit

The machine will appear to work. It will also overheat, cut slowly, and consume teeth and bearings at a rate that erases the margin. Confirm flow, pressure and cooling before purchase, not after the first hot day.

Owning attachments that work a few days a year

Specialist attachments used occasionally carry capital cost every day and earn on a handful of them. Hire is usually cheaper and always more flexible until the utilisation is genuinely there.

Quoting clearing without quoting residue

The felling is the visible work; the material is the cost. Jobs priced on hectares cleared, with disposal assumed, are the most common source of loss in this segment.

  • How many days a year would each attachment under consideration actually be used?
  • What is the client's accepted finish — mulched in place, windrowed, chipped and removed — and is it priced?
  • How many machine moves will this job take, and who pays for them?
  • Would this carrier's specification still appeal to a civil or demolition buyer at resale?

Is an excavator with attachments really a substitute for purpose-built forestry machines?

Not in production terms — a dedicated mulcher or feller buncher will out-produce an excavator-mounted equivalent on the same site. It is a substitute in commercial terms whenever no single task carries enough annual hours to justify a dedicated machine, because the carrier earns across several sectors while a purpose-built machine earns in one. The comparison is between fleets, not between machines.

What size excavator suits land clearing with forestry attachments?

The 20-30 tonne range is the common base because it carries useful attachments while remaining transportable on a standard float and saleable into civil work. Below that, lift capacity limits what can be handled safely at reach; above it, transport and access costs rise faster than productivity on most clearing sites. The right point within the range follows the stem sizes and the reach the work requires.

Should attachments be bought new or used?

Attachments are simpler assets than carriers and used examples can represent good value, but the wear points matter more than the hours: on a mulcher, the rotor, bearings and tooth mounts; on a shear, the blade, pivot and cylinder; on a grapple saw, the saw unit and rotator. Inspect those specifically, and confirm the hydraulic specification matches your carrier before price enters the conversation.

How do I price a clearing job when I cannot see the whole site?

Price what you can verify and make the rest explicitly conditional. The variables that most often break a clearing quote are stem density, stump and rock content, soil abrasiveness and residue volume — none of which are visible from a boundary. Quoting a rate with a stated assumption, and a variation mechanism if the assumption fails, is more defensible than quoting a lump sum on a guess.
